Frederick Community College (FCC) marked a major milestone in its mission to educate,
empower, and prepare a diverse regional workforce as it celebrated its 67th Commencement
Ceremony at Mount St. Mary’s University, Knott Arena. Proof of FCC’s commitment to developing skilled graduates ready to lead, serve, and
thrive in today’s economy is evident in the Class of 2025.
“You deserve to be in every room you walk into—not just as an observer, but as someone
who adds value, asks good questions, offers new perspective, and helps shape what
happens next.” These were the words FCC President Dr. Annesa Payne Cheek shared with
the graduates. She reminded them of the importance of grit, adding, “Research says
grit is one of the best predictors of future success. Not talent. Not luck. Not even
IQ. But grit.”
What does grit look like? “Every time I didn’t believe in myself, my dad would tell me, ‘Never give up and
never surrender.’ Those words have stuck with me... I’ll always be grateful to them
for the sacrifices they made so I could grow into the best version of myself.” said Giulietta Jafari, who earned an Associate of Arts in English and an Associate of Applied Science in
Paralegal Studies. Nathaniel Wachter, who earned an Associate of Science in STEM, also served as President of the Student
Government Association. Nadia Gauto, who earned a degree in Computer Science, served as President of the Muslim Student
Association. Onella St. Hilaire, who earned a double degree in Culinary Arts & Supervision and Baking and Pastry
Arts, also completed the Tier II Certificate in Culinary Medicine for Food Service
Professionals.
The 915 graduates in the Class of 2025 earned 1,040 credentials across programs aligned
with the region’s most in-demand fields. With 90% receiving associate degrees and
10% earning certificates, these graduates are now equipped to meet the workforce needs
of employers throughout Frederick County and beyond. In addition, 47 high school students received their high school diplomas and their
associate degrees in the same month; 87 graduates held a 4.0 GPA academic record;
416 students graduated with honors, high honors, or distinction; and 243 students
were the first in their families to graduate from college.
Among the Class of 2025:
- 36% were adult learners age 25 and older
- 29 were veterans
- Students ranged in age from 18 to 68, with an average age of 27
- 43% identified as students of color.
FCC offers flexible, career-relevant programs designed to help students thrive in
today’s economy, whether they are entering healthcare, cybersecurity, education, business,
public service, or continuing toward advanced degrees.
The Class of 2025 leaves FCC not just with credentials, but with purpose—ready to
change the world, make their mark, and begin the next chapter of their journey. To
